Croft Ales Mural
l was commissioned to design and paint a mural for Croft Ales, a small craft brewery in north Bristol (2018). The design included elements from the owners' favourite beer mats "Beast", "From Dust Till Dawn," and "Black Books."
Anchoring from the Western style of North American aesthetic used throughout the company, the landscape was based on a desert, with dunes, cacti and a dusky setting sun, with visual references to the beer mats woven in.
These included the eyes in the dark, a ruined old stone building, a pensive bear and a crescent moon.
I used a roller for the blocks of colour and a paintbrush to do the details.
The paints were repurposed from Bristol Scrap Store, reducing waste and recycling what was available.
The brewery was closed during this time, so I was able to use a platform and work full days.
The final design of layered landscape and colours was chosen to create a sense of a distant horizon in a small venue, to open it up and bring colour and imagination into the space.
The completed mural creates a creative backdrop for nights out and social events.
The mural is used by Croft Ales in their social media posts, as a backdrop to their beer promotions.
I enjoyed the process of this mural, layering the landscape up, with a range of textures to represent the qualities of the different surroundings, like the crumbly ruin, to the smooth moonlight. This was done all with the aid of Aussie hip hop which seemed to bring only me much delight.
